Examining potential lymph nodes is important to determine if a dog is infected or to diagnose certain infectious diseases. Lymph nodes are mainly used for antibacterial purposes. Once lymph nodes have problems, dogs will be vulnerable to some viruses. Usually, we can check lymph nodes including mandibular lymph nodes, lymph nodes under the ear and around the throat, neck lymph nodes, shoulder lymph nodes, and so on.
The general examiner can use the visual inspection, palpation method to judge, if necessary, can also use the puncture method to judge. In the visual and palpation examination of the potential lymph node, the main attention should be paid to its position, hardness, shape, size, surface status, sensitivity, mobility, and so on. If the problem is serious, do not handle it by yourself, we will promptly refer it to a professional veterinarian.
The pathological changes of lymph nodes can be classified as acute or chronic enlargement, and some may appear suppurative.
(1) Acute swelling: This condition usually presents with marked swelling, smooth surface, and marked heat and pain. Acute swelling of lymph nodes is more common in acute infections of surrounding tissues and organs.
(2) Chronic swelling: This disease generally presents with swelling, sclerosis, uneven surface, no heat, pain, and other related reactions, and most of them will be attached to the surrounding tissues, making it difficult to move. Chronic swelling of the lymph nodes throughout the body is seen in the early stages of canine lymphadenopathy. In addition, a chronic swelling of lymph nodes can also be seen in the surrounding tissues, organs, chronic infection, and inflammation of various lymph nodes.
(3) Abscess of lymph nodes: This problem may cause obvious fluctuations in palpation, in addition to the swelling, thermal sensation, and pain response. To improve the problem, the examiner may need to perform puncture treatment, and then remove the purulent contents, followed by anti-inflammatory treatment. However, the puncture method is not a random operation, and it needs to be handled by someone with some experience. If the owner finds that the dog has suppurative lymph node enlargement, do not try the puncture easily, so as not to cause unnecessary damage to the dog and increase the severity of the problem.
