Samoyeds were originally bred for several different tasks, including hunting, sledding, and reindeer herding. Imagine what power they need to accomplish these tasks! Interestingly, they look like a big teddy bear, wearing a big white coat and always smiling. But how big is this notorious dog breed? How much can you grow in height, weight, and general size?
The average size of the male and female of this species is close in height. There seems to be a greater difference in weight between the two sexes, with men weighing much more than women. Male Samoans are generally between 21 and 23.5 inches tall and weigh an average of 45 to 65 pounds. Females are only slightly shorter, averaging between 19 and 21 inches. Female Samoans weigh much less, between 35 and 50 pounds.
Obviously, if you have two parents older than your Samoyed, you are likely to be on the top of the size chart, just as you have two smaller ones, you can count on your parents to be smaller than you. In addition, as far as other breeds are concerned, there are always some dogs that are above average in size.
By looking at Samoyeds, you might think that they are a large breed, but they are actually classified as medium-sized dogs. Interestingly, some male samoyed does meet the criteria for being classified as large, but these are exceptions, and the breed itself usually does not.
In order to be considered a large breed of dogs, dogs need to be over 24 inches tall and weigh more than 50 pounds. While both men and women can weigh 50 pounds or more, only men can reach a height of 24 inches, the highest level in their range. Because of their size, samoyed can be considered large, or very large, medium-sized dogs. Their fluffy just makes them look bigger than they really are. They look happy and I don’t think they mind being considered a medium-sized dog rather than a large one.
