Coton de Tulear originated in the 17th century. It was the French Legion that brought the bichon descent to Madagascar, and the island has now become a breeding ground for this species. Another similar species is the Kiye Cotton Dog, which was once very popular on Reunion Island on the east coast of Madagascar, but has become extinct. It is generally believed to have been bred from larger fox dogs in northern Germany.
