The ESKIMO is a member of the Pomerania family, but many dog lovers prefer to classify it as a nordic breed. American Eskimo Dog originated from the pomeranian breed, which also includes the white German Pomerania, the White Dutch curly tail dog, the White Pomeranian, and the White Pomerania. At one point after World War II, West Coast dog breeders added Pomeranian to the mix. By the 19th century, small White Pomerania dogs were common in immigrant communities in the United States, and they had largely migrated from Europe with their owners. After arriving in the United States, these dogs were no longer recognized in their own countries, hence the name American Eskimo Dog.
