How many of you remember Rookie?
His story is a wonderful testament to the fact that, no matter how awful their life has been, and no matter how badly they’ve been treated, dogs have an amazing ability to forgive, forget, and forge ahead.
Rookie spent his life in a junkyard in Williamsburg, exposed to the elements and constantly underfed. People passing by might have been frightened by the huge, 90-pound Cane Corso barking from inside the junkyard. But if they moved a little closer, they would have seen that the little stub of Rookie’s tail was wagging, and that this was a seriously sweet, friendly dog just looking for love. If you had approached him, Rookie might have pressed his face against the fence and licked your hand, or maybe leaned his entire body against the fence and tried to get you to pet as much of him as you could. Friendly neighborhood folks soon learned what a sweetheart Rookie was and took to feeding him; one woman even brought him pasta on a regular basis. Dog Habitat frequently received calls from concerned animal lovers about this poor boy trapped in the junkyard. Unfortunately, there was nothing we could do, because he wasn’t a stray: as difficult as it might be to believe, Rookie had an owner, who kept him out in the yard and made him suffer.
2 years ago, though, everything changed.
Rookie has one big fear: thunder. During the 2010 blizzard, he broke out of his yard and was found wandering around in the snow. Some kind stranger brought him to Dog Habitat; he stayed with us for a few days before his owner came to claim him. A few weeks later, another storm caused Rookie to panic and once again break free from his yard. This time, we kept Rookie safe with us.
Rookie quickly became a house favorite; he was constantly wandering the halls like he owned the place. He loved to cuddle with the staff and lounge on his bed in his very own room. He was only with us for a few months before a wonderful family, with their own matching dark brindle frenchie, fell in love with Rookie and took him home. We were sad to see our big sweetheart go, but also happy that Rookie had found such a great family. Rookie’s dad now says that the most satisfying thing in the world is the long groan that Rookie makes every time he lies down in his big, soft bed.
Even though Rookie had a rough start in life he doesn’t seem to care: he now has a loving family that never leaves him out in the cold.

Read the Stringer Report and learn why the people of NYC need to Wake Up and fight for the animals we all say we love so much. Many of the dogs in the system are lost pets with no chips, some are puppies, pregnant moms and casualties of poorly educated people.

Take these three little ones……English Hound puppy anyone?

Rob was delivering a food donation to MACC, when he walked into the offices the ACC staff was crowded around 3 pups. Knowing if they spent the night at the shelter they would all get sick, he said DHR would take them all.

The Lesson Here is that one can find any type of bred or age in our shelter system.

YOU JUST NEED TO LOOK.

Say hello to Pluto! When we pulled Pluto from the Manhattan AC&C his left ear was the size of a softball due to massive hematoma’s. We pulled him off the euth list and got him back here where, due to the kindness of a few people, we were able to get him a few surgeries to heal his ear. Now he’s all healed up and looking for a home. He’s a little older, around 8 or 9, loves to be around people and is surprisingly agile when you toss a tennis ball. Pluto is house-trained, polite on the leash, neutered and up to date on all his vaccinations. Anyone who can open their hearts and homes to a senior dog could not ask for a better boy than Pluto. — at Dog Habitat Rescue.

Our first two adoption events were huge successes. We look forward to continuing our awareness campaigns and helping rescues place their animals in loving homes.

Whiskey loves getting attention and affection. She’ll push Waffles out of the way to steal the spotlight if she has to. She likes her squeaky toys and doesn’t mind a few rounds of fetch every now and then. She isn’t always great at holding it in when she has to go to the bathroom, but she knows what a wee-wee pad is for, and it’s been a good fallback for when she’s in a rush to go. She likes running up and down the block while Waffles leisurely catches up.
